Being the oldest mint in the Americas, the Mexican Mint began their silver bullion series in 1982. The Silver Mexican Libertad series is quickly gaining attention worldwide, due its beautifully designed coins and the interesting history and mythology that comes along with them. The mintage of each coin changes annually, also alluring coin collectors to get in on the fun. In the year 2011, the Mexican Mint minted 1,200,000 silver libertad coins but do to their increasing popularity, this year can be difficult to find. The Mexican Libertad bullion series are one troy ounce of pure silver, in brilliant uncirculated condition, and are delivered in plastic coin flips. For orders of 20 or more, the coins are packaged in mint tubes.
The Libertad's design on the reverse and obverse do not change on the coin but only the year they were made in changes. For instance, the obverse side of this silver coin still pictures a stunning woman with long, feathery wings that extend almost to the top of the coin. She is wearing a drape that is only covering her bottom half. This woman is known as the winged Victoria, a symbol of the Mexican Independence. In the far background, two large volcanoes are shown. These volcanoes are named Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl and they are still active to this day. The volcanoes' mythology states that they were once lovers, who desired to be together forever. The gods answered their request and made them into mountains that will stand side-by-side for eternity. Encircling this outstanding view are the words, "1 onza Plata Pura," "2011," and "Ley .999." In English, this saying means "1 ounce pure silver," and "by law, .999 pure."
