Starting in 1982, the Mexican Silver Libertad series comes from one of the oldest mints in the Americas: the Mexican Mint. Each year, a new coin is minted, displaying the same design on the front and back of the coin; the only difference is the year. The Mexican Mint produced 774,100 silver coins in the year 2013, making this year a difficult one to find. These silver coins are in brilliant uncirculated condition, they weigh one troy ounce of silver, and they come packaged in plastic coin flips for their protection. For orders in increments of 20, they come in mint sealed tubes. Silver coin collectors and investors enjoy the authentic design of the Libertad and its old history.
The obverse of the Libertad is what usually gets people's attention. Front and center is the remarkable winged Victoria, who represents Mexican Independence Victory Column. She is graceful, yet strong with her beautiful wings extending to the top of the coin. She is draped in a cascading scarf that only covers her bottom half. Her placement on the coin is in front of two famous volcanoes to the Mexican culture: Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl. These two volcanoes are still active in Mexico and legend has it that they were once lovers, similar to the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet. Written around the rim of this silver coin, "1 onza plata pura," meaning 1 ounce of pure silver and the coin's year of mintage, "2013," are shown. Also, "ley .999," which means the coin is .999 pure silver by law, is inscribed on the obverse. "MO" is written next to the winged Victoria, the mint-mark of Mexico City. Mexico's Coat of Arms is intricately drawn on the reverse of the coin. There are 10 symbols that indicate Mexico's 10 provinces placed around the national seal.
