2003 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad

In ancient Roman times, the goddess Victoria was seen as the symbol of victory and independence from the captors. She is displayed on the obverse of the Mexican Silver Libertads, representing their independence from Spain. She stands as a statue, strong and stoic, with arms reaching and wings extending. Her top half is bare but her bottom half is covered by a cascading sheet. Lurking behind her are the volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Izztaccihuatl, known for their history as past lovers who desired to spend eternity with one another. The gods granted their plea and made them into volcanoes that will never be moved or shaken. To this day, the volcanoes are still active and represent the eternal passion of the princess and warrior. There are a few inscriptions written on the obverse as well. These inscriptions include: "1 onza plata pura," "2003," "ley .999," and "MO," which is the mintmark of Mexico City. The other words are stating the authenticity of the coin and guaranteeing the purity of its silver. The reverse side portrays the Mexican Coat of Arms, a lone eagle holding a snake in its mouth while balancing on a prickly pear cactus.
