The 2010 Silver Mexican Libertad's obverse depicts the winged Victoria of Mexican Independence Victory Column as a strong, yet delicate being. Her wings are large, her body is stable, and her bottom half is covered by a cascading drape. She stands in front of two large volcanoes, known as Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl. Though fierce, these two volcanoes are said to be ancients lovers, made into mountains to be forever side-by-side. The Mexican Mint's mint-mark, "MO," is inscribed close to the winged Victoria's head. Written on the out edge of the coin is, "1 onza plata pura," "2010," and "Ley .999." These writings are Spanish for stating the coin's authenticity and purity. The reverse design is of Mexico's seal, an eagle balanced on cactus with a long snake in its mouth. Circling the seal are 10 smaller symbols with eagles. Each symbol represents a province in Mexico.
The Mexican Mint was first established in 1535, making it the oldest mint in the Americas. This mint was created by the viceroy of Mexico at the time, Antonio de Mendoza.
