The design of the Morgan Silver dollar began a trend among the silver dollar production. George T. Morgan is known best as the designer of the Morgan dollar. Before he made the design, it was an unspoken tradition to feature Lady Liberty on the obverse, with her entire body in the portrait. Instead, George Morgan illustrated Liberty's face, leaving out her body entirely. This depiction has inspired portraits on currency ever since. The Peace dollar followed the Morgan in production and design, only depicting a face instead of a whole body. Your 1880 Morgan silver dollar was minted at the Philadelphia mint and thus, does not carry a mint mark. It contains approximately 90% silver, 10% copper, and has a diameter of 38.1 millimeters. It is does not weigh one ounce but rather 26.73 grams (there are 31.10 grams in an ounce).
