  • Description:

One aspect about the Morgan Silver Dollar that doesn't get much attention is the political drama. Since silver was being free-mined, it was a constant challenge for the government to try and regulate its production. The Coinage Act of 1873 put to rest the Seated Liberty dollar and introduced the new and exciting Morgan silver dollar. George T. Morgan, the designer of the Morgan silver dollar, also raised eyebrows with his interpretation of Lady Liberty. The traditional portrait, of the Lady, usually consists of a full body view. Instead, Morgan wanted to focus on the beauty that is Lady Liberty's face; removing her body from the portrait all together. Your 1879 Morgan silver dollar was minted in Philadelphia but does not carry a mint mark. It contains 90% silver, 10% copper, and weighs approximately 26.73 grams. It is in almost uncirculated condition, which may carry some bag marks or contain a worn surface.
