1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has been the residence of the president of the United States since John Adams in 1800. At that time it would be largely recognizable to the large complex that is the White House today. The White House was quickly reconstructed soon after the war. Since that time, the White House has been built onto by future presidents and designed and redesigned by many First Ladies.
