The United States Congress had many meeting houses before its permanent home at the US Capitol building in Washington, DC. After ratifying the Constitution, New York City remained the home of the US Government. It was decided in the great compromise of 1790 that the nation’s capital would move to a patch of land at the border of Maryland and Virginia along the Potomac River. Almost immediately the Founders began planning their new federal district. Construction of the Capitol began as early as 1791 and by 1793, George Washington, curiously along with eight other Freemasons, laid the cornerstone of the US Capitol Building.
The obverse of the 1994 Proof US Capitol Bicentennial commemorative silver dollar depicts the Capitol’s dome as it is seen today. The obverse was designed by William C Cousins. The reverse of the coin shows an American eagle with its wings spread above the United States federal shield. Flanking the eagle are four American flags and at the eagle’s talons is the US motto “E Pluribus Unumâ€. The reverse of the coin was designed by long time US Mint Sculptor Engraver John Mercanti.
