  • Description:

The United States has a history of rewarding its greatest generals with the presidency soon after a war. This tradition began with George Washington, through Grant, and in 1952 Dwight D Eisenhower was voted in as 34th president of the United States. Eisenhower was born into a very Christian religious family in Kansas in 1890. Eisenhower began his military career after graduating from West Point in 1915. Though he would see no direct action in World War I, not for lack of trying, he would spend the short decades between the wars raising in military rank until he was promoted to brigadier general in 1941. By the attack at Pearl Harbor, Eisenhower would become General of the Army and oversee the invasions of North Africa and France.

The obverse of the Proof Eisenhower Centennial Commemorative Silver dollar shows the profiles of Five Star General Eisenhower and President Eisenhower. The general profile shows Eisenhower facing left with a military cap with the five star insignia. The rightward facing profile of President Eisenhower shows the president’s suit. Along the rim of the top of the coin are the words “Eisenhower Centennial”. The obverse was designed by veteran US Mint engraver sculptor John Mercanti. The reverse of the coin shows the Eisenhower home in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This national historic site is depicted in actual likeness with the words “Eisenhower Home” engraved underneath it. The reverse of the coin was designed by Marcel Jovine

The 1990 Proof Eisenhower Centennial Commemorative Silver dollar has a mintage of 1,144,461 coins.
