The United Service Organizations was founded in 1941 during World War II to be servicemen’s “home away from homeâ€. It was chartered by Congress but remains completely independent and private which is why it relies heavily on private contributions for funding. During its early years, it brought entertainers to the European and the Pacific Theaters to bring home to the servicemen fighting the war. Many Hollywood celebrities were and continue to be eager to volunteer for troops around the world. Although the USO closed its doors briefly just after World War II, it quickly revived itself after the beginning of the Korean War. American troops have found themselves stationed around the world since, so the USO has kept its purpose.
The 1991 Proof United Service Organizations Commemorative Silver dollar has an obverse with the USO Pendant waving in air. Above, the coin reads “50th Anniversaryâ€. The obverse is not cluttered at all, as the only other inscriptions on the obverse of the coin are the motto, “In God We Trust†and “Liberty 1991†The obverse of the coin was designed by Robert Lamb. The reverse of the coin is much more cluttered than the obverse. There is an eagle perched over the globe symbolizing USO’s providing services worldwide. The inscription flanking the globe is “Fifty Years Service to Service Peopleâ€. The eagle bites down on a ribbon on which is written USO.
The 1991 Proof United Service Organizations Commemorative Silver dollar has a mintage of 321,275 coins. It was designed to commemorate the 50th year anniversary of the USO’s service to service people beginning in 1941.
