The 1878 8tf was the first type struck for circulation. As was tradition, the first 12 coins were pulled by hand, specially wrapped, and given to the president and secretary. The 8 tail feathers strike was a mistake and the die was soon fixed, causing a few varieties of the coin. This Morgan silver dollar is not considered rare but is no less desirable. Only 750,000 were minted so they have become highly sough after by coin collectors everywhere. Your 1878 8tf is in brilliant uncirculated condition, and even though it isn't certified, it carries a grade close to MS63. Like all other Morgans, your Morgan contains 90% silver and weighs 26.73 grams. When Morgans were first minted in 1878, there were numerous acts that were put in place to control the amount of silver mined. One act that encouraged the minting of the Morgans was the Coinage Act of 1873, but this act caused the ceasing in minting of the Seated Liberty dollar. Your coin is packaged in a standard coin flip for extra protection during transit.
