With only 500,000 made, the 1878 7 over 8 Morgan silver dollar is America's most collected and famous silver dollar. It contains 10% Copper and 90% Silver, thus making it a 90% silver dollar. The Morgan was the silver dollar in circulation from 1878-1904, then again in 1921. Due to the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873, the Seated Liberty dollar's production was ceased. The Morgan silver dollar became the first standard silver dollar minted since the Seated Liberty. It earned the name, Morgan, in honor of the English United States Mint engraver, George T. Morgan. Morgan was responsible for other designs too, such as the Columbian Exposition half dollar. Your 1878 7 over 8 Morgan silver dollar is in brilliant uncirculated condition and although it is a raw coin, it carries a grade around MS62. The 7 over 8 tail feathers means there are usually 7 of the eagle's tail feathers but a mistake in stamping occurred, thus making another tail feather visible; an charming error that has brought the coin value and popularity.
