Although it was a year late, in 1904, St. Louis hosted the hundredth year anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase. Much like the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, visitors came from around the world to celebrate the achievements of the United States and also to enjoy the Ferris Wheel. Ida M. Tarbell published her book, The History of the Standard Oil Company, recounting how the company came about, but more importantly how John Rockefeller made his millions at the expense of the average American. The book did a lot to arouse passions against large corporations and trusts. Another American millionaire, W.A. Clark purchased a mega mansion in Manhattan, something unthinkable today, the home had 130 rooms. President Theodore Roosevelt won that year’s presidential election with little trouble.
Although this year’s mintage was far lower than the past couple year, it was still a very high year mintage relative to older years. Over 60 million pennies were minted in 1904. Despite being a year with less pennies, today this date is no less rare in higher grades than that of other Indian Head cents in the 1900’s. Obviously, just a couple of uncirculated rolls can heavily sway prices of these higher grade coins. This year was circulated widely and well into the twentieth century. Collectors should do their best to find problem free examples in the grades they collect.
This year was yet again another year of low mintages from Proof Indian Head cents. Just over 1,800 proof cents were made in 1904. Although good examples can be found from this year, finding cameos is nearly impossible for the 1904 Indian Head cents. However, die polishing lines, in the correct lighting, can be seen on near perfect examples of this year’s Proof Indian Head cent. There are over ten varieties known for this year in the circulation strike. As with all other Indian Head cents, these are mostly repunched dates.
