Technology and companies continued to grow in 1902. A traveler could take a railroad from New York City to Chicago and arrive in 20 hours. However, large trusts and monopolies became a huge concern to President Roosevelt. He used the Sherman Anti Trust Act to break up large corporations and trusts controlling over 75% of one industry. Roosevelt saw his presidential role as a moral leader and a protector of average citizens against large business interests. However, the president looked increasingly south the Panama. He aided a revolution in Panama so the country could declare independence from Colombia and pave the way for the United States to build the Panama Canal. As for the average American of the day, coal prices shot up that winter due to a United Mine Worker strike. Many schools and homes went without heat through the winter causing major grumbling among Americans.
This was yet another record breaking year for mintage of the Indian Head cent. However, 1902 would be a softer struck year than others. It appears that the US Mint kept the dies spread farther apart, so the feathers and denticles are not as crisp. The coin remained the same otherwise, Liberty, looking ever westward, still graced the obverse, while the federal shield protected her on the reverse. In addition to the weakness of the coin this year, these coins circulated widely and for many decades before being plucked from circulation.
The mintage of Proof Indian Head cents this year increased a little from the year before. The mintage would be just over 2,000 coins. This is actually an easier year to find full red gem proof cents. This is likely due to chance, that a few exceptional coins were saved and protected correctly. Some examples may even show very fine die polishing lines. Do not confuse these with improper cleaning. The varieties this year are just some repunched dates. Nothing very noteworthy or collectible.
