Indian Head Cent 1903 G-VG

The year 1903 is a year well remembered. The American people continued to surprise the world with new innovations and technology. Orville and Wilbur Wright tested their first successful glider which would soon become known as the airplane. Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company and Harley Davidson was found the very same year. President Theodore Roosevelt transmitted a friendly message to the King of England via a wireless radio message. The King responded shortly after his warm regards. 1903 also was the first year of the World Series. The Boston Red Sox would be the winners of the first World Series.

This was yet another high mintage year. Over 85,000,000 Indian Head cents were produced. As with all other Indian Head cents of this decade, these coins were circulated widely and for decades. Today this year’s issue can be found in all grades. This is a very accessible year to find a coin as a full red gem. Nothing excites a collector of Indian Head cents like seeing Liberty in all her splendor, basking amidst the original cherry red copper color.

1903 was actually a low mintage of proof Indian Head cents. Under 1,800 proof pennies were issued this year. Despite the low mintage, there are many high grade examples of the 1903 Proof Indian Head cent. Even many grades over PF 65 Red exist. Typically these coins come with a die polishing lines, that in some light may appear to be hairlines, but are actually signs of an untouched coin. There are many varieties known for this year, but as with all other Indian Head cents, most are just repunched dates.
