Approximately, 1,650,000 Mexican Libertads were minted in the year 2009. Every year, the Mexican Mint produces the Mexican Libertad silver bullion coin, with varying mintages dependent on the year. Coin collectors wait in anticipation for the new coin each year, not because of the design since it never changes, but for the unknown mintage. Dating back to 1535, the Mexican Mint is the national mint of Mexico and also reigns in being the oldest mint in the Americas. Not only are these coins outstanding in detail and quality, they also represent ancient Mexican history and mythology. The Mexican Libertads are one troy ounce of pure silver, issued in brilliant uncirculated condition, and are packaged in individual coin flips. For orders of 20 coins or more, they come in mint tubes.
The reverse design on the 2009 Mexican Libertad parades the Mexican Coat of Arms. The Mexican Coat of Arms shows a large eagle, holding a snake in its mouth while perched on some prickly cactus. The smaller symbols encircling the Coat of Arms are of eagles in different positions, representing Mexico's 10 provinces. Turning the coin over, we see a lovely woman, half-dressed, balancing on a pillar. Her gentle arms are outstretched and her wings sweep above the detailed landscape that is behind her. She is also known as the winged Victoria, who is the symbol of Mexico's independence. Encroaching in the background are the very active volcanoes, known as Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl. Once star-crossed lovers, these volcanoes are said to be the gods' answer to a desperate plea from a warrior who tragically lost his princess. Instead of bringing the princess back to life, the gods' made the two lovers into mountains so they will always be laying next to each other. Encircling the rim of the coin are the words, "1 ounce pure silver" in Spanish and the coin's year of mintage, 2009.
