Starting in 1999 and every odd year following, the Royal Mint decided to change the reverse design of the silver Britannia. Usually, during the even years, the reverse displays a tall, standing Britannia figure. In 1999, Britannia is ferociously riding a chariot, her trident recognizable in one hand and her other is tugging on the reigns. Two large, dark stallions are the front-runners of the chariot, kneeling and submitting to her reign pull. Britannia has long since been used as the symbol of protection over the British islands and her intimidating stances revere her as a warrior that demands respect. She is accompanied by the words, "Britannia 1999," and "one ounce fine silver," encircling her victorious ride. The obverse reveals an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, an astounding side portrait of the Queen and her tender facial traits. She wears a crown, strong and proud, over her tight curls. Encompassing her profile, are the words, "Red Fid Def," and "2 pounds." "Red Fid Def," is a shortened phrase, which means Defender of the Faith in Latin.
The silver Britannia bullion series started in 1997 and has increased in popularity ever since. The low mintage and brilliant uncirculated coins are exactly what experienced coin collectors look for when interested in starting a new collection. The Royal Mint only minted 69,394 Britannias in 1999, making them extremely difficult to find. Each coin is guaranteed to be one ounce of pure silver, is considered to be in BU condition even though it exhibits proof-like qualities, and it comes packaged in a coin flip for protection. For Britain, the Britannia represents independence, strength, and has been celebrated since ancient times. There isn't a better gift than that of the silver Britannia series. Filled with history and pure silver, no silver investor or coin collector can go wrong with starting this collection!
