No better way to bring in the new millennium than with buying outstanding coins! The silver Britannia coin series was started by the Royal mint in 1997, since the mint had already started a Britannia series for gold. Britannia is an ancient womanly figure, who was used to represent a British island ruled by Rome. Once Rome evacuated, Britain kept the symbol of Britannia and preserved her as a goddess. The silver Britannia series offers coins that are promised to be pure silver, in brilliant uncirculated condition with proof-like features, and they are delivered in plastic coin flips for shipping. In 2000, only 81,301 silver coins were minted, attracting avid collectors worldwide.
The reverse design of this stunning Britannia coin is of, you guess it, Britannia. The goddess stands purposefully, as she tightly holds a trident in one hand and an olive branch in the other. She is clothed in a cascading drape that perfectly outlines her slender yet strong frame. Her head is adorned with a Corinthian helmet, a helmet made of bronze and was designed in ancient Greece that covers her face and contains a large projection to protect her neck. She is a warrior, ready and willing to fight, containing confidence knowing she will return from battle. Accompanying her on the reverse side are the words, "Britannia 2000," and "one ounce fine silver," inscribed around the rim of the coin. Turning the coin over to the obverse side, a lovely side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is revealed. She has graced the obverse side of all British bullion coins for many years now and her aging is depicted in the later years. Her crown stands on a sea of curly tendrils and her lips give off a slight smirk. The coin's denomination, "2 pounds," is included on this side, along with the saying "Red Fid Def," meaning defender of the faith. Whether you are new to coin collecting or have been doing it for years, the silver Britannia is a popular coin series you should be considering for your collection.
