Beginning in 1997, the Royal Mint decided to start a silver version of their gold Britannia series. The Royal Mint only issued proof design silver coins for the inaugural year but decided to incorporate the uncirculated bullion coins the following year. The 1998 silver Britannia is actually the first brilliant uncirculated coin to be minted in the series. They only minted a measly 88,909 silver Britannias in 1998, alluring coin collectors everywhere to consider this up and coming collection. Each coin is .999 pure silver, in brilliant uncirculated condition, and comes packaged in a coin flip for protection in transit.
In 1998 then followed by the even years, the Royal Mint used a standing Britannia as the reverse design. The Britannia is a female symbol of the Roman Britain island, usually dressed as if she is preparing for battle. On the reverse design of the 1998 Britannia, the Britannia stands while holding a trident in one hand and an olive branch in the other. She is looking to her side as the wind blows her toga. She looks like a cross between an angel and a warrior, without faltering or shying away. Written perfectly around the rim of the coin are the words, "Britannia 1998," and "one ounce fine silver." The obverse includes the portrait of the person who rules Britain at the time. In this case, the obverse displays Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who rules the Commonwealth of Nations. Her delicate side profile is intricately drawn, not missing a detail. "Red Fid Def" is written on the obverse as well and is short for "Defender of the Faith." The coin's legal tender, "2 pounds," in also inscribed under the Queen. The Royal Mint Britannia series makes for a great addition to any silver coin collection and will only gather value as the years pass.
