The military academy at West Point is located at a unique position where the Hudson River snakes through the state in an S curve. George Washington found it to be the most strategic position during the Revolutionary War. This is why the name Benedict Arnold is still synonymous with treason as he attempted to give up the fort to the British. Just after his inauguration, Thomas Jefferson planned to build a military academy at West Point. This academy was opened in 1802. It is today the nation’s oldest military academy in addition to this, it is also the longest running military installation in American history. Today it is recognized as an extremely prestigious and unique learning and service institution.
