Thomas Jefferson was born April 13, 1743 in the Colony of Virginia. Today he is remembered as one of America’s most prominent Founding Fathers. Not only was he the principal author of the Declaration of Independence pushing the American Colonies further from Great Britain, but he also represented the burgeoning colonies in France during the American Revolution. After the war, he served as the nation’s first Secretary of State under George Washington. Later, with the help of his friend James Madison, Thomas Jefferson started the Democratic Republican party to oppose the Federalist party and pursue stronger state’s rights. This was the beginning of the United States’ two party system which still plagues the country today. He became the nation’s third president.
The obverse of the 1993 Proof Thomas Jefferson 250th Anniversary Silver dollar shows a bust of a younger Thomas Jefferson. Written above him is “Thomas Jefferson Architect of Democracyâ€. It has the year of his birth, 1743, and the year the coin was struck, 1993. The bust is actually a rendering of Gilbert Stuart’s Medallion portrait of the former president. The reverse of the coin shows Thomas Jefferson’s famous home: Monticello. Thomas Jefferson would spend much of his peak years as a Founding Father away from this home, but it retained its fame for architecture nonetheless. Both the obverse and the reverse were designed by James Ferrell.
