Because of poor public reception, the Susan B. Anthony Dollar was only minted from 1979-1981 and then again in 1999. The US Mint pulled out all of the stops for this new dollar, expecting to satisfy the public after the Eisenhower Dollar disappointment. It took several deliberations to figure out the size, metallic composition, and design of the new dollar. When the Susan B. Anthony Dollar was first minted, many people didn't use it since its size and color resembled too much of the quarter. The vending machine industry also had a say in the production of the new dollar, making sure it could fit properly in any US machine. At the end of the day, there were 500 million dollars minted and only a few were actually used. The 1980-S Proof Susan B. Anthony Dollar was minted at the world renown San Francisco Mint and is in perfect proof condition.
