The Sacagawea Dollar was inspired by the independently brave Shoshone Indian, who single-handedly led the Lewis and Clark Expedition safely across unchartered territory. Sacagawea helped guide the two from North Dakota to the Pacific Coast, making cultural connections as they went. Apart from history books, Sacagawea has also been used as a symbol of feminism and the women's rights movements, especially in the early 1900's. The San Francisco Mint also has a historical and interesting past. First established as a result of the famous gold rushes, the San Francisco Mint shocked the nation by its $4 million turn over in gold products for just its first year. The 2003-S Sacagawea Dollar contains the famous "S" mint-mark, as well as the coin's date of mintage on the obverse. Since most of the Sacagawea Dollars are produced for collection purposes and not for currency, they are easy to find in mint state condition.
