It is also one of the most successful US Mints that is still operating today, having located three times in its first 30 years of business. The San Francisco Mint was first established in 1854, as a way to produce currency out of the gold that was being mined. In just its first year of production, the San Francisco Mint produced $4 million dollars of gold coins and were able to open a second facility. Your 1886-S Morgan is only one of 750,000 Morgans that were minted in San Francisco in 1886 and it signifies it was minted in San Francisco by carrying the official "S" mint-mark on the reverse of the coin and is in fine condition, with heavy wear to be expected.
