  • Description:

The Mexican Silver Libertad series originated in one of the oldest mints in the Americas: the Mexican Mint. Established in 1535 by the viceroy of Mexico at the time, the Mexican Mint has produced coins that have circulated all over the world. Their silver peso became the basis for other countries' currency, for example, the Japanese yen, the US silver dollar, and the Chinese yuan. The Mexican Mint started the Libertad series in 1982 and has continued to present day. Each year, the Libertad is minted with the only difference from the previous year, is the year. As you will learn, the appeal to the Libertads, besides from being .999 pure silver and in brilliant uncirculated condition, is its history and mythology. Since there are several stories and legends represented in each coin, every silver coin collector makes sure to add the Mexican Libertad to their collection.

The obverse presents the winged Victoria, in all of her elegant glory. Standing proudly, with her arms outstretched and her wings extending, Victoria is a vision of beauty and independence for the Mexican culture. Only half of her body is covered by a streaming drape that is lightly touched by the wind. In the far distance are the famous volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Izztaccihuatl. In Mexican mythology, these volcanoes are said to be once star-crossed lovers who desired to spend eternity side-by-side. "2011," and "ley .999," are all inscribed on the edge of the coin to state its purity. Mexico's national seal is pictured on the reverse of the silver coin. This seal consists of a large eagle, perched on a prickly pear cactus while holding a snake. Encompassing this seal are 10 small designs with the eagle in different stances. These designs are to symbolize the 10 provinces of Mexico.
