2 Ounce Silver Libertads

2 Ounce Silver Libertads

In 1921, the Mexican Mint made a gold coin called the Centenario, that represents the 100th year anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain. A winged Victoria was featured on this coin to celebrate their victory over their captors and their well-deserved independence from the prestigious country. The Centenario was such a beloved coin that in 1982, the Mexican Mint decided to start a bullion coin series to honor it. The Mexican mint is one of the oldest mints in the Americas and has quite the reputation among other countries. The Mexican Libertad series has become an extremely popular coin collection among silver coin aficionados everywhere. These coins are .999 pure silver and come in brilliant uncirculated and proof condition.

Design of the 2oz Mexican Silver Libertads

Although this is not her first debut, the goddess Victoria is pictured on the obverse side of the Mexican Libertad. She is poised on top of a pillar with only her bottom half covered. The choice of clothing placement represents her fierce attitude while still maintaining the delicate grace of a woman. Just like victory in a battle, Victoria is highly pursued but not easily attained. Beyond her beauty lays two large volcanoes. Once believed to be star-crossed lovers, these volcanoes are a legend all their own. Ancient times refers to these lovers as Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl, a warrior and a princess who desired to spend eternity by each other's side. Their wish was granted and they have remained active volcanoes ever since, never to be moved. The reverse is of Mexico's national seal, the eagle eating a snake. In this case, the eagle represents courage and immortality and its eating its adversary, the snake.

Lowest Mintages

The Mexican Silver Libertad series is a popular one, one of the reasons being its variety offered in terms of size options. The series also contains some very low mintages as well. Below are the lowest mintages for the 2oz Mexican Silver Libertads and it's important to note that the 2oz coins began production in 1996, not 1982.

  • 1999: 5,000 minted
  • 2005: 3,549 minted
  • 2006: 5,800 minted
