  • Description:

The country continued to wane economically through the year 1895. The United States treasury reserves fell all the way to $41 million. Famously, in order to help the government, J. P. Morgan and August Belmont loaned the government $62 million in gold. As no wealthy capitalist goes into a deal to lose money, they were given bonds at very attractive rates. At the other end of the economic spectrum, thousands of laborers walked off their jobs and traveled to Washington DC to petition Congress for better pay and shorter hours. For those lovers of literature, Crane’s Civil War masterpiece, The Red Badge is Courage, was published this year.
