The United States has census every ten years. The year 1890 would be no different. The United States was growing; it had a population of over 60,000,000. Like today, the wealthiest one percent of Americans earned more than the bottom fifty percent combined. Congress would pass the Sherman Antitrust Act in 1890 to limit the powers of monopolies. This act would not see much action until the following century. The Battle of Wounded Knee took place in 1890. This would be the last major Native American resistance to the white man’s encroachment of land until the 1970’s. The United States Congress decided to continue to subsidize the silver mining industry by passing the Sherman Act of 1890. The United States was hungry for more Morgan Silver Dollars.
A new company won the US Mint’s contract for blank planchets. So this year would have an almost imperceptible difference in color to years prior. The beautiful coin remains the same otherwise. Lady Liberty still dons her Native American cap of feathers with the word “Liberty†written on the front. The reverse has an oak wreath protected by the federal shield. The US Mint made over 57,000,000 cents in the year 1890. These coins circulated extensively throughout the remainder of the century and well into the following. However, one should be able to find this year in any grade despite wide and long circulation.
This was a year with far fewer proofs minted than in previous years. Just over 2,700 proof cents were minted this year. Despite its smaller mintage size, one should be able to find this coin in all grades, however, finding a full red is prohibitively difficult. There is one very unique variety this year. It is considered a quadrupled die. It actually presents four bold outlines around the legend. Other than this, as with almost all other Indian Head cents, most other varieties are repunched dates.
