The New Orleans Mint is no longer in production but stands proud as one of the oldest US landmarks. Also known as the Old Mint, this mint and three others were responsible for the production of the Morgan silver dollars. As you will learn, keeping the Morgans in production was more difficult than it sounds. It was the first silver dollar to be minted after the Seated Liberty dollar. The government tried to regulate the silver production by passing laws that gave the US Mint amounts and deadlines that needed to be met. After 1904, the Morgan was reauthorized for production for one more year but fell victim to an up and coming silver dollar, the Peace dollar. Your 1891-O Morgan was minted in New Orleans and carries the "O" mint-mark on the reverse. Your BU Morgan has earned the ideal grade of MS63 by NGC. NGC is known not only for their sleek, convenient packaging but also for their incredibly high and intense grading standards.
