The Philadelphia Mint is one of two last-standing Mints that produced to Morgan silver dollar from 1878-1904 and is the first ever US mint facility. The Founding Fathers strongly desired for the US to establish a national identity and set-up a means to international commerce. The US needed to put itself on the map and establishing a currency was the way to do it. Philadelphia was the capital, at the time, so that seemed like the appropriate place for the first mint. Although the original building was torn down years ago, the Philadelphia Mint is one of two mints that produced the Morgan and is still minting today. Your 1888 Morgan has been graded by NGC and has received the grade of MS64. MS64 is an ideal grade, for most collectors, since anything above MS65 is more difficult to find.
