Minted by the first mint facility in the US, the 1967 SMS Washington Quarter does not carry a mint-mark. The 1967 SMS Quarter is a part of the Special Mint Set minted in 1967. From 1965-1967, there were Special Mint Sets issued, claiming the coins contained better than average strikes, due to being struck on higher tonnage presses, instead of the usual presses used for circulated coins. George Washington's well-known portrait it presented on the coin's obverse, as well as the coin's date of mintage. The reverse features the US National Seal and the coin's legal tender value of a quarter dollar. There are 40 quarters in a roll and are protected in a plastic coin tube. Collecting the Washington Quarter set is ideal for history aficionados or novice collectors.
George Washington is a household name in every house in the US. He was once referred to as the "father of the country," and rightfully so! Washington began his career by inheriting a tobacco farm in Virginia. Instead of riding out his family's fortune, he enlisted. He was quickly recognized as an outstanding leader and was promoted to Senior Officer in the Colonial Militia during the French and Indian War. His early successes only set him up for further greatness when he was the Commander in Chief for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In 1789, Washington was elected the first president of the United States and held the office for 8 years. Washington made history and earned the respect worldwide when he decided to step down, instead of keep running for president. Compared to other world leaders, who usually serve until they die, Washington desired to see the country thrive with new leadership every 4-8 years and not a minute longer.
