George Washington is a household name in every house in the US. He was once referred to as the "father of the country," and rightfully so! Washington began his career by inheriting a tobacco farm in Virginia. Instead of riding out his family’s fortune, he enlisted. He was quickly recognized as an outstanding leader and was promoted to Senior Officer in the Colonial Militia during the French and Indian War. His early successes only set him up for further greatness when he was the Commander in Chief for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In 1789, Washington was elected the first president of the United States and held the office for 8 years. Washington made history and earned the respect worldwide when he decided to step down, instead of keep running for president. Compared to other world leaders, who usually “reign†until they die, Washington desired to see the country thrive with new leadership every 4-8 years and not a minute longer.
The US Mint long desired to make a commemorative coin honoring the first president's bicentennial of his birthday. At first, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar was on the chopping block. But after some strong consideration from Congress, the Standing Liberty Quarter was the one that was replaced. Although a design had already been chosen for the commemorative, the US Mint decided to go with a design from another sculptor. This design is what we know to be the Quarter design today. The 1935 Washington Quarter has a large mintage and is in brilliant uncirculated condition. With George Washington’s face on the obverse and the US National Seal on the reverse, the Washington Quarter is one of the longest coin series in US history.
