  • Description:

The 1947-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar contains a low mintage and is the last Walking Lib to be minted by the Denver Mint. The 1947-D is also considered to be in fine condition, exhibiting some wear and compromising the details of the coin but still has a readable date. Since the Denver Mint was established much later than the other mints, its participation in major coin collections was limited causing collectors to put any silver coin with a "D" mint-mark at the top of their collecting list. Only established in 1906, the Denver Mint mainly focused on commemorative coins but also participated in the Walking Liberty Half Dollar production. In 1921, the Denver joined forces with its sister branches to help produce the Morgan silver dollar, that was soon changed to the Peace silver dollar.

Adolph A. Weinman, the designer for the Walking Liberty, desired to portray the goddess as youthful. Lady Liberty was inspired by the Greek goddess, she is oftentimes depicted as such. The Walking Liberty Half Dollar featured the first design, in half dollar history, to depict Liberty's full body. On the preceding half dollars, Liberty's facial portrait was constantly being reinvented but nobody dared to adapt her body onto a coin. The Walking Liberty has inspired many designs through the years and more recently, the American Silver Eagle. Adolph A. Weinman was the German-American sculptor, who designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. Weinman desired to portray Liberty as youthful and showing her as the Grecian goddess that inspired her for US currency was the way to celebrate her youth. Her slender body is delicately draped by a robe, with her one arm holding a bundle of olive branches and the other outstretched. The sun rises in the background and the date of mintage is under Liberty's sandaled feet. A large eagle is perched on the reverse design, with the coin's denomination as well.
