The Walking Liberty design is still viewed as one of the most stunning designs ever on a coin and inspired the current American Silver Eagle bullion coin. Adolph A. Weinman was the German-American sculptor chosen to redesign the half dollar and the dime after the reign of the Barber design. Weinman is also responsible for the Mercury dime and other commemorative coin designs throughout the US. The 1939 Walking Liberty Half Dollar was minted by the original mint and contains quite a high mintage. Considered to be in almost uncirculated condition, the 1939 Walking Liberty exhibits slight wear and is lacking the original mint shine. Like all 90% silver coins, the 1939 Walking Liberty is subject to naturally tarnish over time if not stored properly. Tarnishing does not affect the overall value of the coin, just the appearance and can easily be removed.
Founded when the US desperately needed an identity but also a means to international commerce, the Founding Fathers decided that a national mint was the answer. The Mint Act officially announced the opening of the Philadelphia Mint and also instituted guidelines for the newly minted currency. A dollar decimal system would be used to assign the currency with legal tender values. Also, an emblematic symbol of liberty must be included on US currency, hence why so many adaptations of Liberty have been used. Lady Liberty has been depicted in many ways on US currency, from head portraits to a full body portrayal. The most popular Liberty designs tend to be ones that are different from the others, such as the Walking Liberty design. Liberty is depicted as youthful and active in this portrait, revealing her Grecian goddess roots.
