  • Description:

The 1935-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a part of a lower mintage and is in extra fine condition. The 1935-S considered to be in extra fine condition, due to its slight wear, especially around the main image details. The San Francisco Mint has mint-marked its coins with a "S" on the reverse of the Walking Liberty. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar was produced from 1916-1947. After the barrage of the Barber designs on the dime, quarter, and half dollars, the new Mint Engraver, Robert W. Woolley, discovered it was the law to discontinue a coin series after it has been produced for 25 years. Following the successful Barber Half Dollar from Chief Mint Engraver, Charles Barber, the Walking Liberty design won in a friendly competition in the Commission of Fine Arts. Adolph A. Weinman was the sculptor behind the stunning Liberty design and was assigned the task of changing the dime's design as well. Instead of sticking to a portrait-like design, Weinman desired to depict Liberty's youth and her origin. Liberty is a Grecian goddess so naturally Weinman wanted to show her in a Greek toga, her slender and long body gently draped with a flowing robe. This design is still used currently on the American Silver Eagle and is proved to be one of the most popular designs in coin history.

The San Francisco Mint also holds a large amount of history, since it still produces coins currently. When the California Gold Rushes were happening, the US needed a mint on the West-Coast to help turn the gold into coins. The San Francisco Mint was the solution and outgrew its first building in just the first year of production. Among all of the mints that have come and gone, the San Francisco Mint has always upheld its reputation of high quality control and strong strikes.
