  • Description:

The 1916-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar contains a very low mintage of just 508,000 and is in about good condition. Collectors expect about good condition to contain severe wear on the coin since it has been circulated. Due to the low mintage, the 1916-S is very hard to find in higher conditions. The infamous San Francisco Mint, which is dated all the way back to the California gold rushes, is one of those mints. This west coast-based mint was established to help prospectors turn their mined treasure into currency. In just its first year in production, the San Francisco Mint turned $4 million worth of gold into coins! Of course, it was also a part of popular silver coin series, such as the Morgan and the Walking Liberty. The San Francisco Mint produced a large quantity of Walking Liberty Half Dollars in 1939, lending to its accessibility and low premiums.

Liberty has been a beloved symbol to US currency since the beginning of US currency in 1792. When Adolph A. Weinman was asked to create a new design for the half dollar, he surprised everyone with a new and updated design. Instead of Liberty stiffly posing for a portrait, she is roaming free wearing only a light-weight robe. She holds olive branches as she invites warriors to join her in battle. This elevated version of Liberty is still considered one of the most stunning renditions of all time. The reverse pictures an eagle, perched with its wings outstretched. Weinman wanted to portray Liberty as young and he did just that in perhaps the most beautiful coin in history. The fire to collect these historical beauties hasn't diminished among collectors and investors are even enjoying the 90% numismatic value of these gems.
