  • Description:
The 1877 Trade Dollar was minted at the Sanfrancisco Mint, as indicated by the "S" mint mark. The Trade Dollar series (1873–1885) was issued primarily for foreign trade, especially in Asia, where U.S. merchants sought to compete with Spanish and Mexican silver coins that were widely used in commerce. Obverse: Designed by William Barber, the coin features Lady Liberty seated on a bale of goods, extending an olive branch as a symbol of peace and commerce. A ribbon with "LIBERTY" drapes across the bale, and the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed below. Reverse: Displays a bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching three arrows and an olive branch, representing both military readiness and a desire for peace. Please Note: Many Trade Dollars were chopmarked (stamped by Chinese merchants to verify authenticity) or melted down. This coin has been cleaned and chopped.
