Description:
The Gobrecht silver dollar was an attempt at reintroducing silver dollars back into circulation, as the last dollars made were in 1804. The obverse of the coin has a seated Liberty, much like the later seated dollars, and the reverse has an eagle flying left, which was later used on the flying eagle cents of 1856-1858. 1600 pieces were produced and released in 1836, and a small number were released again in 1838 and 1839 after some minor modifications. The type was shot-lived, with a total of 1900 pieces minted, which was then followed by the 1840 Seated Liberty Dollar.
