The 1900 Lafayette Dollar is the first commemorative silver dollar issued by the United States. It was minted to help fund the erection of a statue of General Marquis de Lafayette in Paris, honoring his contributions to the American Revolution.
The obverse features conjoined busts of George Washington and Lafayette, making it the first U.S. coin to depict a former president. The reverse displays Lafayette on horseback, modeled after a statue created by sculptor Paul Wayland Bartlett. The inscription reads "ERECTED BY THE YOUTH OF THE UNITED STATES IN HONOR OF GEN. LAFAYETTE", symbolizing American appreciation for the French general’s role in securing U.S. independence.
With only 50,000 pieces struck, this coin is highly collectible, especially in higher grades. It holds historical significance as America’s first commemorative silver dollar and remains a sought-after numismatic treasure.
