After being appointed by President John Adams to the United States Supreme Court, John Marshall quickly became a decisive figure on the court. He had a very outsized influence over other members of the court. Before his tenure as Chief Justice, the Supreme Court was seen as a rather insignificant institution of government. Many legal disputes were settled in state courts, not federal courts. During Marshall’s long tenure as Chief Justice, the Supreme Court would become a formidable force in the federal government. His court would decide over one thousand decisions, most actually written by himself. Through his leadership the Supreme Court would become a more co-equal branch of government.
The obverse of the 2005 Uncirculated Chief Justice John Marshall Commemorative silver dollar shows a profile portrait of John Marshall. He is wearing traditional garb of the early nineteenth century, namely, an overcoat with a large collar and a light scarf. Along the rim of the coin are the words “Chief Justice United States Supreme Court 1801-1835â€. The reverse of the coin shows the old Supreme Court Chamber. This chamber became too small for the growing government. Today the location of the Supreme Court is just behind the US Capitol building. The old Supreme Court Chamber is still accessible to tourists today!
The 2005 Uncirculated Chief Justice John Marshall Commemorative Silver dollar has a mintage of 67,096 coins. This is but a fraction of the coins minted for the proof issue. The coin was struck to celebrate the life of Chief Justice John Marshall and commemorate his 250th birthday.
