  • Description:

As president, Thomas Jefferson worked toward protecting American trade interests along the Barbary coast and against tough British trade policies. Also, in his first term, Jefferson put together the Louisiana Purchase from France, nearly doubling the nation’s territory. Controversially, Jefferson started a practice of Native American removal from their lands in the Louisiana Territory. Thomas Jefferson was largely a popular president while holding the office, not without creating enemies at home. Democratic Republican newspapers eviscerated his old friend then political enemy, John Adams. However, with the help of fellow Founder Benjamin Rush, he and John Adams mended their relationship just before their deaths, which amazingly fell on the same day, July 4, 1826.

The obverse of the 1993 Uncirculated Thomas Jefferson 250th Anniversary Silver dollar depicts a famous bust of the late president. Here, he is shown more youthful than many other famous depictions show. In an almost Grecian fashion, he has many locks of curled hair and a strong masculine chin, all the while looking out toward the West. The reverse of the coin shows the popular president’s famous neoclassical plantation, Monticello. Today, Monticello is outside of modern Charlottesville, Virginia. The plantation rests on top of the United States’ motto “E Pluribus Unum” along with a small “P” signifying that the coin was struck in Philadelphia. THe coin, both obverse and reverse, was designed by James Ferrell.

The 1993 Uncirculated Thomas Jefferson Commemorative Silver dollar has a mintage of 266,927 coins. This coin commemorates the famous Founding Father’s 250th birthday. If you have any questions regarding this or any commemorative coin, please call our knowledgeable staff at (800) 735-1311.
