Nearing the end of 1606, colonizers from Great Britain set sail for the New World. They left with only a charter from the London Company and the little knowledge that Spain had done very well to find gold in the New World. The three ships: Susan Constant, Discovery, and Godspeed made three stops before finally arriving in Powhatan Confederacy territory. They settled along the Powhatan River, which they subsequently named James River after King James I of England. Upon arrival and even well into the settlement’s existence, the mortality rate of colonizers was roughly 80%. The Powhatan native to that area were essential to the perseverance and future success of this colony. After teaching the settlers agricultural basics for the New World’s climate, the settlers went on to massacre the Native Americans less than a decade later.
The Uncirculated Jamestown Silver Commemorative dollar shows three men on the obverse of the coin. They each appear to have served different roles for the success of the future colony. One appears to be a common laborer, another an English noble, and finally a Powhatan in traditional garb. In the background one can see the mast of a ship and early colonial housing. The obverse of the coin was designed by Donna Weaver. The reverse shows three ships floating in water. The Susan Constant, Discovery, and Godspeed sail majestically to found what would later become the United States of America. This reverse was designed by Susan Gamble and it is her first design for the United States Mint.
