This coin was designed to commemorate Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. It was settled along the bank of the James River, known then as the Powhatan River. Today is is a short drive from modern Williamsburg. The settlement was established by the Virginia Company of London and became a permanent settlement after shortly being abandoned in 1610. Jamestown was formed in land that belonged to the Powhatan Confederacy. At first, the Confederacy welcomed the colonists, even went so far as to provide crucial aid and support. These good relations unfortunately did not last and within the first decade, the English settlers killed all the Americans native to that area.
The proof issue of the Jamestown Proof Silver Commemorative dollar shows three faces of diversity on the obverse. Obviously the Native American of the Paspahegh tribe that did so much to aid the fledgling settlement. To his right, an English nobleman in traditional garb for the time. Finally, the lower class European worker coming to foreign shores in search for work and wealth in another world. Across the three figures on the obverse is the phrase “Founding Jamestown†and along the bottom the 400 year span of “1607-2007â€. This obverse was designed by Donna Weaver. The reverse shows the three ships, the Susan Constant; Discovery; and Godspeed, that carried the English settlers on their four month journey to the New World. This reverse was designed by Susan Gamble. This coin shows her first designs done for the United States Mint.
