Obverse: The obverse of the 1874-S Trade Dollar features Lady Liberty seated on a bale of goods, symbolizing trade and commerce. She extends her right hand, holding an olive branch, signifying peace, while her left hand rests on a bundle of wheat and cotton. The word LIBERTY is inscribed on a flowing ribbon. Below her, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears on a scroll, with the date 1874 centered at the bottom. Thirteen six-pointed stars encircle the coin’s rim, representing the original U.S. colonies.

Reverse: The reverse showcases a heraldic eagle clutching three arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left, representing strength and peace. Above the eagle, the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA follows the curve of the coin, with the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM on a ribbon. Below the eagle, the denomination is specified as 420 GR Calculator NS. 900 FINE, denoting the coin's silver content and weight standard. The bottom of the reverse bears the inscription TRADE DOLLAR, with an “S” mintmark above the denomination indicating it was struck at the San Francisco Mint.

Historical Significance: Trade Dollars were introduced in 1873 to facilitate commerce with China and other foreign markets. However, they became controversial when they began circulating domestically at a lower value, leading to their demonetization in 1876. The 1874-S is a common date in the series but remains a prized collectible due to its historical significance.
