  • Description:

Finding this numismatic gem in higher grades can be extremely difficult. The 1917-S Type II Standing Liberty Quarter has a mintage of just over 5.5 million, which is a lot lower than those minted at the Philadelphia Mint the same year. The 1917-S Type II Standing Liberty Quarter was minted by the San Francisco Mint and carries the infamous "S" mint-mark. Being the second oldest mint in the US, the San Francisco Mint still participates in popular coin collections today. When it was first established in 1854, the San Francisco Mint was solely used to help turn mined gold into coins for currency. This gave the miners a chance to make money off of their hard earned gold. Once the gold rush calmed, the San Francisco Mint only grew larger and more lucrative. Marking their coins with a "S," the San Francisco Mint is best known for its strong strikes on coins and competitively low mintages.

Succeeded by the Washington Quarter, the Standing Liberty Quarter was minted for 15 years before being replaced. The design of the Standing Liberty came as a breath of fresh air at a time when Roosevelt desired to bring back art on currency. After several revisions, the Standing Liberty depicts a warrior-like Lady Liberty, wearing chain mail on her chest and is holding a shield with one hand. The other hand is holding an olive branch, signifying peace. The date of mintage is inscribed underneath Liberty's sandaled feet. The reverse features a large eagle in flight, with the coin's monetary denomination of a quarter dollar. From a very militaristic theme to dolphins to a more peaceful Liberty, the Standing Liberty Quarter has come a long way during its production.
