  • Description:

The 1917-D Type II Standing Liberty Quarter has a mintage of 6.2 million and is considered to be in very good condition. The 1917-D Type II Standing Liberty Quarter will contain large amounts of wear and the date may be more worn than the actual coin. Minted from 1916 until 1930, the Standing Liberty Quarter replaced the Barber Quarter. The Standing Liberty was President Theodore Roosevelt's attempt to making US coinage a work of art again. Although there were some low mintage years, the Standing Liberty Quarter's average mintage is quite high. Until 1925, the Standing Liberty was weakly struck, causing the coin's date to wear off without difficulty. The issue was finally fixed in 1925, but many circulated quarters still have weak dates, even if they have a higher grade. There were two variety coins minted in 1917, due to the revisions that took place. The 1917 Type I coins contain a bare breasted Lady Liberty, which was changed to her breasts being covered by chain mail for the Type II coins.

The Denver Mint has proudly been producing coins since 1906; starting out as just a commemorative coin mint. The Denver Mint spread its wings and began participating in larger coin series, leaving its coins with appealing mintages for future collectors. On the obverse, Lady Liberty stands with her head turned, almost as if she is keeping watch. Her garb summons the old warrior clothing, with chainmail on her breast plate and a round shield for protection. Liberty's other hand holds olive branches, which is the universal sign of peace. The date of mintage is etched into the area beneath her bare feet. The reverse displays a large eagle in flight, with wings outspread, and the coin's monetary value of a quarter dollar.
