  • Description:

The 1917 Type II Standing Liberty Quarter exhibits chainmail on Lady Liberty's breasts, due to complaints of too much exposure before the chainmail revision; the Type I features a bare breasted Lady Liberty. With a mintage of over 13 million, the 1917 Type II is usually found in the medium grades, such as this very fine condition coin. Very fine condition contains a large amount of wear, compromising intricate details of the coin. Although the date is still readable, the 1917 Type II was struck before the die revision in 1925. All quarters minted before 1925 are said to have been weakly struck, causing the date to wear without too much trouble. Any quarter, in any condition, that was minted before 1925 may have a more worn date than the actual coin itself.

Minted by the Philadelphia Mint, the 1917 Type II Standing Liberty Quarter carries no mint-mark. The Philadelphia Mint has carried innumerable amounts of history, ever since it started producing coins in 1792. Still active today, the Philadelphia Mint has had its hand in countless famous coin collections. Being the oldest mint in US history, the Philadelphia Mint also stands as the first ever mint in the US. Much gratitude to our Founding Fathers, who greatly desired to partake in international commerce and thus, needed a currency for the new nation. Since then, the Philadelphia Mint has seen its fair share of historical wars, turnovers in presidency, and has even been in the center of important protests. Through it all, the Philadelphia Mint has been able to stay true to the Founding Fathers' original vision and has produced some of the most valuable coin collections in history.
