The San Francisco Mint first opened to help make coins out of the gold the prospectors were mining during the gold rush. That was a good idea because only in its first year, it minted over $4 million worth of coins. The San Francisco Mint stamps all of its coins with the "S" mint-mark and is known for its strong strikes that last through the heaviest circulation. The 1876-S Seated Liberty Quarter is in very fine condition, exhibiting wear on both sides of the coin. The San Francisco Mint produced over 8 million quarters, in 1876, which is considered a fairly high mintage for the San Francisco Mint. In 1876, the first telephone call was made, the US celebrated its first centennial, and the first cremation took place.
The Goddess of Liberty has been used in many cultures to celebrate the concept of liberty and freedom from oppressors, dating back to the Roman Empire and before. The goddess has been used on currency worldwide, especially in the US, and still is a nationwide icon. Normally, the goddess is depicted wearing a draped robe that loosely fits and her hands are usually occupied holding other significant symbols, such as olive branches, arrows, or a torch. For the US, the most prominent depiction stands in New York's harbor, a gift from the French in 1886. The Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mint participated in the production of the Seated Liberty Quarter. The San Francisco Mint was established until 1854 so it joined in later on for the series. The Seated Liberty Quarter series is not ideal for novice collectors. Only the experienced collectors seem to be ambitious enough to keep up with the hard searches and high premiums.
