Dating back to the Roman Empire and perhaps, before, the Goddess of Liberty has been used in many cultures to celebrate the concept of liberty and freedom from oppressors. The goddess has been used on currency worldwide, especially in the US, and still is a nationwide icon. Normally, the goddess is depicted wearing a draped robe that loosely fits and her hands are usually occupied holding other significant symbols, such as olive branches, arrows, or a torch. For the US, the most prominent depiction stands in New York's harbor, a gift from the French in 1886.
The Philadelphia Mint produced over 9 million quarters in 1857, making this quarter an easier find in higher grades for collectors. The 1857 Seated Liberty Quarter is considered to be in extra fine condition, which tends to be the preferred condition among collectors. The 1857 Seated Liberty Quarter contains some wear with great detail still in tact. The Philadelphia Mint was the main mint, in the US, that produced some of the most valuable coin collections we know today. Being established in 1792, the Philadelphia Mint is almost as old as this US and was founded by the Founding Fathers. The Philadelphia Mint put the US on the international commerce map, allowing for the new country to participate in importing and exporting with other countries.
