James Buchanon, a Democratic president, was elected and inaugurated in the year 1856. He is the only bachelor president in American history. Of course most of the political issues of the day revolved around slavery. Bleeding Kansas, a series of violent confrontations between pro slavery and anti slavery forces, came to a boiling point at the Battle of Black Jack. John Brown’s anti slavery forces crushed the Kansan pro slavery forces. He would later become very famous for another raid some years later. Violence was also breaking out in other parts of the country as well. So much so, a vigilante force in San Francisco was formed to fight crime. They lynched two gangsters and arrested many Democratic leaders.
The 1856-O Seated Liberty half dollar began yet another variety type for the series. The arrows were originally added to the dime to show that the weight had been changed. Now the coin would go back to its original design sans arrows, but the weight would remain as the new weight of 12.44 grams. The circulation for the 1856-O Seated Liberty half dollar was over 2.5 million! This coin can be found in all circulation grades with ease. In mint state, this issue can be found with nice luster. It is believed that over four hundred coins now exist in mint state condition.
Some half dollars from this issue is sometimes seen with light striking at the top of the obverse and the corresponding region on the reverse. Even some denticles are missing on mint state coins. Therefore, because this is such an ubiquitous coin, collectors should do their best to find those with no errors or problems. This issue was made with twelve obverse dies and ten reverse dies.
